Puzzle 44 - Cryptarithms

 There is a new term for you and me. 

A cryptarithm is a mathematical puzzle where the digits in a sum have been replaced by letters.

Let us look at the famous example of this category.

    SEND
+ MORE
------------
MONEY

Each of the letter S, E, N etc stand for a unique digit. When the alphabets are replaced with their digit values, the addition equation must hold good.

Let us try to find out the easiest hint. Since there are no values in 5th position in both SEND and MORE, M is the carry-over value. It can only be 1. Even if S is 9 and M is 2, the carry will be still be 1. 

So M is 1.

Now replacing M with 1, we get

        SEND

+      1ORE

  ---------------------

      1ONEY 

You need to proceed in this way.

      SHIRT
  +TSHIRT
----------------
 CLOTHES

          using the method we didn't discuss earlier. :)

 The question was  What is wrong with this proof ? a=b multiply both the sides by a     --1 a2 = ab  add -b2 to both the side           --2 a2-b2 =ab-b2  factorizing                                --3 (a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)  divide both the sides by (a-b)    ---4 a+b=b Substituting a with b,              ---5 2b = b Dividing both the sides by b    ---6 2 = 1   The problem is with step 4. When a is equal to b, a-b is zero. You can not divide numbers by zero because division is only defined for non-zero numbers.
